SEO vs GEO: How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI

People still Google things. They also increasingly ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity, and Google itself now answers many searches with an AI summary before any website appears. If your business isn’t part of those answers, you’re invisible to a growing share of buyers.

SEO and GEO in one line each

  • SEO (search engine optimization) gets your pages ranked in search results, so people click through to your site.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization), also called AI SEO, gets your business understood, trusted and recommended by AI assistants when someone asks them for a recommendation.

They overlap heavily. AI assistants learn about businesses largely from the same web that search engines crawl, so strong SEO is the foundation of GEO. But the goal is different: SEO competes for a click, GEO competes to be named in an answer.

Why being named in an AI answer matters

When someone asks an assistant “who’s a good UI/UX designer for a fintech app in Dubai?”, they usually get two or three names, not ten blue links. There is no second page. Being one of the names in that short list is worth far more than ranking fifth on Google for the same question.

What AI assistants actually look for

  • Clear, consistent information about who you are. If your title, location and services read differently on your site, LinkedIn and every directory, the model has no confident answer to give.
  • Structured data. Schema markup states in machine-readable form who you are, what you do and where you work, instead of leaving it to be inferred.
  • Content that answers questions directly. Pages built around real questions, with the answer stated plainly near the top, are easy to quote.
  • Third-party mentions. Being cited, listed and reviewed elsewhere is what turns a claim about yourself into something the model treats as fact.
  • Freshness. Assistants that search live prefer pages that look current over pages last touched in 2019.

A practical GEO checklist

  1. Fix the basics of SEO first: indexable pages, sensible titles and descriptions, fast loading and a clean sitemap.
  2. Add entity markup: Person or Organization schema with your name, job titles, areas of expertise, locations and links to your profiles elsewhere.
  3. Make one page per real question or service, instead of one page that vaguely covers everything.
  4. Add an FAQ section to important pages, using the exact questions people ask, with short, direct answers.
  5. Align your profiles. The same bio, titles and links on your site, LinkedIn, business listings and anywhere else you appear.
  6. Earn mentions: directory listings, interviews, guest articles and reviews on sites the models already trust.
  7. Track it: ask the assistants your target questions once a month and record whether you appear.

What doesn’t work

Keyword stuffing, AI-generated filler published in bulk, and pages that promise an answer then bury it under 800 words of throat-clearing. Assistants summarize the clearest, most credible source they can find. Padding makes you easier to skip.

How long it takes

Technical fixes and structured data can be picked up within weeks. Being consistently recommended takes longer, because it depends on mentions across the web accumulating. Three to six months is a realistic horizon for meaningful change, the same as SEO.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO in marketing?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: the work of making a business easy for AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity to understand, trust and recommend.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO builds on SEO. Assistants rely on the same web content search engines index, so a site that ranks well is usually also a site that gets cited.

How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?

Ask it the questions your customers would ask, such as “best [service] in [city]”. Do it in a private or incognito window while logged out, or in a temporary chat, so your own history and saved memory don’t skew the answer. Note whether you’re named, repeat monthly and track the trend.

Does schema markup help with AI search?

It helps. Structured data removes ambiguity about who you are, what you do and where you operate, which makes it safer for an assistant to name you.
